Early Successes in Sustainability
For more than two decades, Inova Health System has worked to be a good steward of the earth and our resources. Some of our early successes include:
- Eliminating incinerator burning and EtO for sterilizing of instruments in compliance with the Clean Air Act
- Partnering with Healthcare Forum and Modern Healthcare in 1992 to sponsor a forum to raise awareness about the impact of hospital products on the environment
- Participating in the EPA Green Lights program in 1995 to improve our carbon footprint and our energy efficiency. Upgrades made to our lighting systems generated annual savings of 1,532,663 kWh and prevented emissions of 2,435,637 pounds of C02.
- Ongoing vigilance to ensure we are in compliance with all EPA emission standards as set by local, state and federal regulations
- Participating in a pilot program to recycle IV bags
- Continuing our very successful cardboard recycling program
- Promoting the use of re-useable needle boxes
