The Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children Pediatric Residency Program uniquely combines the academic rigor of a university-based hospital, the complexities of subspecialty pediatrics and the family atmosphere of a community program.
Located in beautiful Northern Virginia, about ten miles outside of Washington, D.C., Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children serves one of the country's most rapidly growing and desirable areas. With over 12,000 deliveries last year, Inova Fairfax Hospital possesses one of the nation's busiest delivery services.
A tradition of excellence
Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children has been educating residents and medical students for more than 20 years. The program helps residents establish a broad-based and humane framework for the understanding of illnesses affecting children and young adults. This provides the basis for a lifetime of professional learning and development to continually enrich one's pediatric knowledge and care.
Broad range of clinical experiences
From cardiothoracic surgery for complex congenital heart disease to the Inova Pediatric Center for underserved children, residents learn by directly caring for children in inpatient, emergency and outpatient settings. The strategic absence of inpatient subspecialty fellows ensures that residents take an active role in the care of all patients, regardless of complexity. Residents also become comfortable with issues including healthcare delivery, patient advocacy and public policy.
Launching your professional career
Inova's program fully prepares residents to enter general pediatrics or to begin subspecialty training. Approximately 60 percent of our residents pursue careers in primary care, while others choose to pursue supspecialty pediatrics. Residents benefit from our program's friendly, informal atmosphere which allows them to interact closely with a large number of pediatricians and subpecialists. It is a point of pride that our residents usually get their top choice for fellowships and have their pick of general pediatric positions. Meet many of our 2009-10 residents.
