About John F. Rothrock, MD

Dr. John Rothrock is a specialty care physician board certified in neurology and vascular neurology at Inova Health System. He joined Inova in 2022 and has been practicing since 1984.

Prior to joining Inova, Dr. Rothrock was Professor and Vice Chairman for George Washington University’s neurology department. He established and directed the University of California San Diego’s Stroke Research Center and Headache Research Center as well as the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Headache Research Center. Dr. Rothrock also established centers for clinical research involving neurosciences at the University of South Alabama and the University of Nevada. In 2015, he established a research center for headache at George Washington University.

Along with conducting epidemiologic research intended to better characterize various aspects of cerebrovascular disease and migraine, Dr. Rothrock and his colleagues have assisted in the development of such therapies as intravenous t-PA for acute stroke therapy; warfarin for stroke prevention in individuals with atrial fibrillation; clopidogrel for stroke prevention; self-injectable sumatriptan for acute migraine; and divalproex sodium, topiramate and onabotulinumtoxinA for migraine prophylaxis.

Women's Health magazine and Men's Health magazine have distinguished him as one of the 20 best neurologists in America.

Dr. Rothrock has published seven adult novels and three children's books.
