Michael Svestka, MD, FACS, is a board-certified general surgeon and Assistant Professor of Medical Education at the University of Virginia School of Medicine at Inova. He currently serves as Medical Director of the Inova Comprehensive Hernia Program.
Dr. Svestka is an active member of the American Hernia Society and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), as well as a peer reviewer for the SAGES affiliate journal, Surgical Endoscopy. He is committed to staying up to date on the latest research and techniques in the field of hernia surgery and is a member of the Abdominal Core Health Quality Collaborative, a national database designed to track hernia outcomes.
Born and raised in McLean, VA, Dr. Svestka is a native of the Washington, DC, metropolitan area and a graduate of St. Albans School at Washington National Cathedral. He completed his undergraduate studies at the College of William and Mary, followed by a postbaccalaureate at Harvard, before attending Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk. He completed a five-year residency in general surgery at SUNY Stony Brook in New York, where he served as administrative chief resident, garnering five teaching awards during his tenure. Following residency, he spent six months at the Cleveland Clinic Comprehensive Hernia Center learning the latest techniques in abdominal wall reconstruction.
With a focused practice in complex hernia repairs, he is a high-volume abdominal wall reconstruction specialist with experience in both open and robotic approaches.
