Dr. Abigail Lawler is a specialty care physician board certified in neurology at Inova who specializes in movement disorders, memory disorders and disorders of the autonomic nervous system. In 2022, after several years as the Medical Director of the Parkinson’s Association of San Diego and working in private practice, Dr. Lawler joined the Inova Parkinson’s and Movement Disorders Center to serve as the program’s Autonomics Director as well as its fifth movement disorders specialist
Dr. Lawler is originally from Ohio, where she completed her undergraduate degree at Ohio University and studied abroad through Duke University in Costa Rica, completing a Spanish immersion program. She came back to Ohio for medical school at the University of Toledo and then went on to complete her residency training in neurology at Medstar Georgetown University Hospital in Washington DC, where she served as chief resident. Dr. Lawler stayed at Georgetown University to complete a fellowship in movement and memory disorders with a concentration in autonomic disorders, helped start Georgetown’s first-ever parkinsonism and dementia clinic, and participated in baseline cognitive and neurologic assessments of retired National Football League (NFL) players for the NFL Players Association.
Dr. Lawler is well versed in treating many neurologic conditions but specializes in treating movement disorders. She offers a wide variety of treatment and advanced diagnostic options beyond traditional medical management for Parkinson’s disease, including deep brain stimulation, Duopa, subcutaneous levodopa skin pumps and skin biopsies. Dr. Lawler also specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of autonomic disorders like postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, muscle dystonia and spasticity, as well as all the various types of dementia. Dr Lawler is currently developing the first-ever autonomic lab at Inova to help diagnose and treat patients with different types of dysautonomia.
