About Anurag Sahu, MD

Dr. Anurag Sahu is the Director of the Adult Congenital Heart Center at Inova Schar Heart and Vascular, part of Inova Health System. He joined Inova in 2022 and has been practicing since 2003.

Prior to joining Inova, Dr. Sahu was Associate Professor of Medicine in adult cardiology and Associate Professor of Radiology at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, where he was on the faculty for 12 years. There, he served as the founding director of cardiac intensive care; senior faculty on the adult congenital heart service; fellowship director of the cardiac MRI/CT imaging program; and lead faculty for the high-risk cardiovascular pregnancy program.

Dr. Sahu completed medical school at the University of Missouri in Kansas City in its combined six-year bachelor of arts and doctor of medicine program. Then, he completed his internal medicine residency at Georgetown – Washington Hospital Center; general adult cardiology fellowship training at Rush University in Chicago; and two years of advanced training in cardiac imaging and adult congenital heart disease at Ohio State University in Columbus. Among all his stops, Dr. Sahu’s favorite was the brief time he spent in Hawaii, where he was the only cardiologist on the island of Kauai.

Dr. Sahu has published book chapters on cardiovascular imaging and journal articles in publications including the Journal of Heart and Lung Transplant, JACC Interventions, and the Journal of Thoracic Imaging. He has served as site principal investigator and site co-principal investigator for a variety of clinical trials, including those involving the use of cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging risk stratification in dilated cardiomyopathy and transcatheter pulmonary valve replacement using the Alterra device. He was also on the State of Georgia’s Maternal Mortality-Morbidity Task Force.

Outside the office, Dr. Sahu and his wife Tara have volunteered at the Atlanta Nicholas House, a homeless shelter that keeps families together during times of housing insecurity. They also enjoy traveling and spending time with their three children. Dr. Sahu and his wife are both natives of the Washington, DC, region, having both grown up in Maryland, and are lifelong DC sports fans.
