About Issam Khayata, MD

Dr. Issam Khayata is a specialty care physician board certified in critical care medicine, pain medicine and anesthesiology. He joined Inova in 2024 and has been practicing since 1997.

Prior to joining Inova, Dr. Khayata was an anesthesiologist at Old Dominion Anesthesia in Arlington, VA, and a pain management specialist at Adams Compassionate Health Care in Chantilly, VA.

Dr. Khayata’s clinical areas of interest include neuromodulation through peripheral nerve stimulation; treatment of degenerative osteoarthritis of the hip, knee and shoulder; and treatment of compression fractures of the spine with kyphoplasty.

Dr. Khayata completed his residency in anesthesiology at Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago. He then moved to Massachusetts to complete a fellowship in critical care medicine followed by a pain medicine fellowship. He worked at the University of Massachusetts Medical School,  where he was involved in teaching and research activities. He served in several leadership positions in academia and professional associations. Dr. Khayata was involved in clinical research at University of Massachusetts Medical School, where he gained the rank of associate professor of anesthesiology and surgery. He moved to Virginia in 2016 and had been in private practice until joining Inova.

Dr. Khayata believes in a personalized and comprehensive approach to treating pain conditions. His practice focuses on diagnostic consults, evaluation for back and neck pain, epidural injections, facet injections, sacroiliac joint injections, peripheral nerve blocks, sympathetic nerve blocks, pharmacologic nonopioid pain management and trigger point injections.
