Dr. Jafar Al-Mondhiry is a medical oncologist board certified in medical oncology, hematology and internal medicine. He joined Inova in 2022 and has been practicing since 2015.
Prior to joining Inova, Dr. Al-Mondhiry worked as an Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine for the Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine in Los Angeles, CA.
Dr. Al-Mondhiry specializes in the treatment of cutaneous malignancies, including melanoma, merkel cell carcinoma, advanced squamous cell and basal cell carcinomas, and cutaneous lymphomas. His clinical research interests focus on new medical therapies for patients with metastatic melanoma, merkel cell carcinoma, and advanced cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma, particularly in the neoadjuvant space. Other areas of interest include medical education, medical ethics, communication skills training (CST), and palliative/supportive care for patients with advanced cancers. He co-leads the ASCO Palliative Care Communities of Practice.
Dr. Al-Mondhiry leads the psycho-oncology curriculum for the Inova hematology/oncology fellowship program, engaging fellows in didactic presentations, narrative medicine discussions, CST, and patient support group attendance, highlighting the human aspects of cancer care—for both patients and their oncologists.
In his free time, he enjoys running, doing yoga, weightlifting, practicing meditation, podcasting on topics in the medical humanities and creative nonfiction writing with pieces published in many different outlets for medical humanities. He is the father of three wonderful girls.
