Dr. Joseph Hartwich is a specialty care physician board certified in general and pediatric surgery at Inova.
Dr. Hartwich has specific interest in the surgical care of newborn infants and pediatric surgical oncology. He is trained in the most up-to-date minimally invasive techniques to ensure a rapid recovery after every child’s surgery. As a pediatric surgeon, he restricts his practice to children alone, ranging from premature neonates to adolescents, and specializes in surgical diseases affecting children.
After graduating from medical school at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Dr. Hartwich attended a general surgery residency at Virginia Commonwealth University (Medical College of Virginia) in Richmond. While in residency, he also spent time as a clinical research fellow at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN. During his fellowship at St. Jude, he developed a passion for the surgical care and treatment of children with cancer. Following residency, he attended Hasbro Children’s Hospital (Brown University) in Providence, RI, for his pediatric surgery fellowship. During his time in fellowship, he learned specialized skills to care for infants and premature babies.
Dr. Hartwich has been in practice in the Northern Virginia area for over eight years, first in private practice and then as a member of Inova L.J. Murphy Children’s Hospital. At Inova, Dr. Hartwich enjoys being part of a large and collaborative team focused on the care and needs of our youngest patients. He is proud to be a member of the American College of Surgeons verified Level I Children’s Surgery Center at Inova and maintains several leadership roles within the hospital.
Outside the office, Dr. Hartwich enjoys outdoor activities with his family and three dogs and cheering on the Florida Gators. He is grateful to live in Northern Virginia and call this area his home.
