Dr. Simon Chung is a specialty care physician board certified in urology at Inova Health System. Dr. Chung joined Inova in 2014 and has been practicing since 1993. He served as an active medical staff member at Inova Fairfax Hospital and served as the hospital’s Urology Section Chief until 2022.
Prior to joining Inova, Dr. Chung was the Rotation Site Director for George Washington University’s urology residency program from 1993 to 2013 and was honored four times by the residents with an Excellence in Teaching Award. He has been named to “Top Doctor” lists in several regional publications since entering his practice and earned national recognition on the Castle Connolly Top Doctors list.
Dr. Chung’s clinical areas of interest include urological cancers, stone disease, and minimally invasive and robotic surgeries. He was among the first surgeons worldwide, in 2004, to perform robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgery and has accumulated a varied and extensive experience to safely treat cancers, anatomic abnormalities and traumatic injuries of the urinary system. He has devised kidney-sparing cancer surgery (robotic-assisted laparoscopic partial nephrectomy) strategies for complex kidney tumor removal that otherwise would result in unnecessary loss of the entire kidney. Dr. Chung has assisted in the development and growth of robotic surgery programs in gynecology, colorectal surgery, general surgery, otorhinolaryngology, pediatric surgery and transplant surgery at Inova. In consideration of these efforts, Dr. Chung was designated System Medical Director of Robotics for Inova in 2022.
Dr. Chung is proud of his patient-centric approach to healthcare delivery, emphasizing patient education with plain language discussions and shared decision making. The “Golden Rule” (do unto others…) applies to his patient care philosophy.
Outside his medical world, Dr. Chung spends as much time with his family and close friends as possible. He is a lifelong builder of radio-controlled model aircraft and model rockets. Someday, he’ll get them off the ground again.
