Program overview

The mission of the Inova Gastroenterology Fellowship is to develop well-rounded, clinically and academically outstanding gastroenterologists. Our training program offers a balanced mix of longitudinal inpatient and outpatient experiences, enabling fellows to contribute to Inova Health System’s mission of providing compassionate, comprehensive care to patients and families across the Northern Virginia and Washington D.C. metropolitan areas.

We aim to:

provide a learning environment that supports fellows in meeting the ACGME milestones for Gastroenterology through graded supervision in clinical and procedural settings.
emphasize the delivery of evidence-based, ethical, and safe care.
foster effective and professional communication within a multidisciplinary care team.
offer faculty development opportunities that enhance teaching and mentorship skills.

The fellowship includes a robust didactic curriculum featuring weekly case conferences and board review sessions, monthly journal clubs, and quarterly research and quality conferences. These sessions will be led by a diverse group of faculty members with expertise in general gastroenterology, inflammatory bowel disease, hepatology, interventional endoscopy, colorectal surgery, oncology, and pathology. Fellows will receive current, evidence-based knowledge from faculty members with specialized expertise across multiple areas of gastrointestinal medicine. Fellows will also receive mentorship in scholarly activities, including clinical trial design and implementation, population health research, large database analysis, healthcare quality initiatives, patient safety, and medical device research. Additionally, fellows will be encouraged to develop their teaching skills and contribute to the education of medical students and residents through participation in professional committees and didactic sessions.

The Inova Division of Gastroenterology is deeply committed to diversity and inclusion, as evidenced by the diverse makeup of our core faculty and staff. Faculty and staff actively participate in initiatives sponsored by the Inova Diversity and Inclusion Council. One such initiative is the creation of Team Member Resource Groups (TMRGs)—voluntary, team-member-led groups focused on shared characteristics or life experiences such as race, gender, and sexual orientation. Participation in these groups fosters connection and cultivates a culture of inclusion within our division. Additionally, faculty and staff have received training in recognizing unconscious and implicit bias, which is crucial for maintaining a supportive and equitable training environment.

Faculty members are also encouraged to engage in research exploring disparities in digestive diseases, helping to ensure our program addresses both clinical excellence and social responsibility.
