What is Inova's Nursing Orientation Program?

When you are hired as a nurse at Inova you will attend our nursing orientation program. New graduate nurses will participate in training that will foster learning in a specialty area of nursing. Our specialty orientation programs are designed based on criteria established by the specialty organization.

Experienced registered nurses who desire to enter a specialty field in which he or she has no current experience will attend a specialty orientation program based on the needs of the new hire as determined by a needs assessment.

A program for a novice nurse or advanced beginner nurses following the first week of general orientation. The program is grounded in Jean Watson’s Human Caring Theory to support the caregiver in seeing the human dignity inherent in each individual served. It includes:

  • The American Psychiatric Nurses Association Transition to Practice Online Certificate Program
  • Virtual and in-person specialty training classes
  • Precepted shifts on the unit

A program for novice and advanced beginner nurses that provides a foundation for critical care practice. It includes:

  • Inova developed HealthStream modules
  • AACN Essentials of Critical Care Orientation (ECCO) modules
  • Virtual and in-person specialty training classes
  • Precepted shifts on the unit

This program provides a basic foundation in the principles of emergency nursing for both novice and advanced beginner nurses transitioning into an emergency department setting. It includes:

  • Inova developed HealthStream modules
  • ENA Elsevier Emergency Nursing Orientation 3.0 Online Learning Modules
  • Virtual and in-person specialty training classes
  • Learning content for both pediatric and adult patient populations
  • Precepted shifts in emergency department

A program for a novice nurse transitioning into a medical surgical telemetry unit. It includes:

A program for novice and advanced beginner nurses transitioning into a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). It provides an introduction to caring for critically ill neonates and includes:

  • Precepted shifts on the unit

This program teaches registered nurses how to assess and manage adult oncology patients in an acute care setting. This program typically follows the med/surg fellowship and includes:

This program equips novice and advanced beginner nurses with the basic skills and knowledge essential to mastering the principles of paranesthesia nursing. It includes:

This program equips novice and advanced beginner nurses with the basic skills and knowledge essential to mastering the principles of family-centered care working with mother-baby couplets during the first days of life. It includes:

This program teaches the basic skills and knowledge essential to practice in the perinatal specialty units of family-centered care, high risk perinatal and labor delivery recovery units.

This 6-month program provides a structured learning environment for registered nurses to apply the fundamental knowledge and skills of perioperative nursing. It includes:

  • AORN Periop 101: core curriculum

This program is a 3-credit course offered in conjunction with George Mason University's College of Nursing and Health Sciences in their undergraduate program. Inova nurses are responsible for paying George Mason University (GMU) tuition at the standard GMU rate for contract courses.
