Referral guidelines

Patients with complex aortic conditions often require multidisciplinary expertise for effective treatment planning. Physicians should evaluate each patient's medical history and risk factors to determine the necessity of referral based on the following criteria:

  • Complex aortic dissections: involving aneurysmal degeneration, ischemia or complex anatomy
  • Abdominal aneurysms: juxtarenal, pararenal and other complex aneurysms
  • High-risk factors: patients with severe comorbidities or advanced age
  • Complex anatomy: failed EVARs, complex endoleaks, and anatomy involving the aortic arch or descending thoracic aorta
  • Need for hybrid procedures: cases requiring a combination of open surgical and endovascular techniques
  • Previous aortic surgery: history complicating current management

Why refer to Inova's Complex Aortic Program?

Inova's Complex Aortic Program improves patient outcomes for patients with complex aortic diseases by leveraging collaborative expertise and specialized treatment options. This streamlined approach ensures patients receive the most effective and personalized care possible. Here are the key reasons to refer your patients:

Our team, including vascular and cardiac surgeons and interventional radiologists, provides personalized management for complex aortic issues. Dr. Ryan and Dr. Endicott focus on high-risk endovascular interventions for patients with limited options.

We employ leading-edge techniques such as FEVAR for previously inoperable aortic aneurysms, improving blood flow to side branch arteries. We are also involved in the GORE® ARISE II Trial to explore less invasive treatments for ascending aortic pathologies.

Our expertise in complex open ascending and arch repairs ensures reduced mortality rates for hybrid procedures compared to the national average, significantly improving patient outcomes.

With advanced 3D aortic modeling, we create tailored treatment plans based on individual anatomy. Dr. Spinosa uses state-of-the-art imaging technologies to refine surgical strategies and optimize outcomes.

Our advanced hybrid operating room suites enhance surgical collaboration and are equipped with intraoperative CT and high-definition imaging. This technology allows for real-time adjustments during procedures, optimizing anatomical repairs and surgical precision.

We maintain close communication with referring providers throughout treatment and follow-ups, ensuring continuity of care.

Collaborate with multiple aortic disease specialists

We are available to consult on the following:

  • Genetic conditions: family history of aortic disease or conditions like Marfan or Ehlers-Danlos syndromes
  • Uncertain diagnosis: cases requiring advanced imaging for clarification
