Rheumatology is a sub-specialty of internal medicine that involves the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal and multi organ autoimmune conditions, referred to as Rheumatic disease. Our Rheumatology team treats a variety of autoimmune diseases, inflammatory conditions and osteoporosis. In addition, we may provide initial consultation services for musculoskeletal pain conditions.

There are more than 100 types of rheumatic diseases, including but not limited to, Rheumatoid arthritis, Systemic lupus, Systemic Sclerosis, Systemic Vasculitis, Osteoarthritis, Gout, Spondyloarthropathy, Osteoporosis and Psoriatic arthritis. Many of the autoimmune diseases may require various blood tests and imaging modalities to best help diagnose and plan treatment, which may involve several visits with your specialist.

It is normal to experience muscle and joint pain from time to time. When the muscle and joint pain is not resolving as one would expect, additional evaluation may be needed. It is best to discuss initially with your primary care provider who may perform further testing as indicated. If there is concern for an underlying rheumatic condition, he/she will refer you to rheumatology for evaluation. After a consultation, a rheumatologist may find that the management of your joint pain may be best suited for another specialist (Orthopedics, Sports Medicine, Neurology, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, etc).
