The Inova Mount Vernon Hospital volunteers have been a vital part of Inova Mount Vernon Hospital since the doors opened in 1976. In fact, people from the community, excited about having a hospital in their own backyard, formed an Auxiliary before the hospital was completed. Through their efforts, a strong volunteer program was built, making a significant contribution to the patients and their families – our neighbors!
Each day, our volunteers bring to the hospital extra pairs of hands, compassionate hearts and a willingness to promote health, wellness and caring. Volunteers are an integral part of our hospital's dedication to provide the highest quality care to anyone entering our doors. In addition to their work on site, they also operate the Select Seconds thrift shop which helps increase funding to support important hospital programs and services.

Requirements to become a volunteer
- Commit to one, 3-4 hour shift per week for a minimum of 6 months
- Be at least 18 years of age (for involvement in the College and Adult programs)
- Complete and pass a background check
- Complete two rounds of tuberculosis screening OR one tuberculosis blood test
- Provide confirmation of receiving the MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella), Varicella (Chickenpox), Tdap for Pertussis (Whooping Cough) vaccines OR proof of immunity via titer
- Receive a flu vaccine (if onboarding during flu season)
- Take online training
- Attend new volunteer training class
Applications are reviewed during designated open application windows throughout the calendar year. Before applying, please be sure you’ll be available to attend the corresponding mandatory orientation session and meet the attendance requirement of serving one, 3-4 hour shift per week for a minimum of six months. You’ll begin volunteering within one week of the orientation session.
- Applications open: Friday, June 21 at 10 a.m. – Friday, June 28 at 10 a.m.
- All applications will be responded to by Wednesday, July 3.
- Mandatory Meet & Greet/Information session via Zoom: Wednesday, July 9 at 7 p.m. or Friday, July 10 at 2 p.m.
- Mandatory In Person Orientation: Tuesday, August 20 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
*Please note: At this time, new high school student applications are only accepted at Inova Mount Vernon for the summer program. Applications for the high school program are currently closed.
