Holiday Hours

With the exception of Inova hospitals, Inova Emergency Care and Inova-GoHealth Urgent Care, all Inova outpatient offices will be closed for the Christmas and New Year's Day holidays – Wednesday, Dec. 25 and Wednesday, Jan. 1.

Some Inova care sites have additional closures for the holidays, which will be noted on the relevant location pages.

Graduate Medical Education

Inova Fairfax Medical Campus Department of Medicine has a long tradition of dedication to Graduate Medical Education throughout the region. We started our own home grown Internal Medicine Residency Program in 2014 and graduated our first class in 2017. Prior to that inception, our dedication to teaching excellence and commitment was exemplified by our affiliation with George Washington University and Georgetown University Internal Medicine Residency Programs as their required clinical rotations on our inpatient wards and coronary care unit. Despite the youth of our program, we are fortunate to recruit and sustain our own Inova residents and have markedly condensed our affiliate rotators.

For our trainees there exists an established academic infrastructure consisting of teaching rounds, morning report, noon conference, morbidity and mortality conference, medical grand rounds, chief of service rounds and physical diagnosis rounds. The program is supported by two to three chief medical residents and a dedicated group of faculty with a balance of general internists and medical specialists.

Undergraduate Medical Students

Inova Fairfax Medical Campus Department of Medicine is one of the most highly sought after sites for medical student education in the region. Partners in the education mission include Virginia Commonwealth University, which has an Inova Campus, and Georgetown University, which commits students to our coronary care unit on a monthly basis.

The medical students are integrated into the daily operations of the hospital to learn from the department’s top clinician educators. Clinical experiences include the coronary care unit, the medical intensive care unit, the general medicine wards, and subspecialty experiences in the junior year in nephrology, cardiology, gastroenterology, infectious disease, rheumatology, endocrinology, geriatrics, and palliative care medicine. Senior year opportunities are expanded to include nearly every section of the IFMC Department of Internal Medicine.

Students interested in undertaking a rotation within one of the provided clinical areas are asked to call the Office of Undergraduate Medical Education at 703-776-6699. Our UME office will assist all affiliate students and those from all accredited medical schools in completing necessary application paperwork.
