Should You Be Seen by a Specialist for Diagnosis and Follow-Up Care?

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an unpredictable disease that has different symptoms in different people. No two cases of MS are alike – and because of that, you need an MS specialist in order to get the best care.

Many medical conditions can cause symptoms similar to MS, called mimic MS, making diagnosis difficult. MS is not simply identified from a symptom checklist. In order to accurately diagnose MS, it is necessary to also exclude diseases that mimic MS. In fact, nearly one in three (30 percent) of patients who are referred to an MS specialist actually don’t have this disorder. Their symptoms are caused by something else.

Our specialists are experts in the necessary evaluation and testing to make an accurate diagnosis.

Access to sophisticated brain imaging technology is a key piece of the diagnostic puzzle when it comes to identifying and monitoring MS. At Inova, we have the latest technology, including high-resolution MRI machines programmed to better detect the signs of MS in brain scans.

Our specialized diagnostic and testing expertise includes radiologists who are experts in identifying MS on an MRI. We also partner with the Mayo Clinic for advanced lab testing not available with standard lab providers. With these advanced diagnostic tools and tests, we can diagnose and monitor MS and neuroimmunologic conditions more accurately, leading to better long-term outcomes.

It is important to consult with an MS and neuroimmunologic medical specialist for follow-up care. MS changes over time and requires medical treatments adjustments accordingly. Additionally, we keep abreast of the latest diagnosis and treatment options in the field, so that we can establish and adjust your customized care plan throughout your treatment.
