Breast Screenings

There are multiple options for breast cancer screening, including genetic counseling and testing, clinical breast exams with an experienced healthcare provider, and breast imaging including mammograms, ultrasound, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the breast.

However, timing and frequency of breast cancer screenings will be determined by whether or not you are at an average or above-average risk for developing breast cancer. If you are average risk and fall under the criteria below, and have not had a mammogram within the last year, we ask you to schedule your mammogram first before calling to schedule an appointment.

  • Women between 40 and 44 have the option to start screening with a mammogram every year.
  • Women 45 to 54 should get mammograms every year.
  • Women 55 and older can switch to a mammogram every other year, or they can choose to continue yearly mammograms. Screening should continue as long as a woman is in good health and is expected to live at least 10 more years.
  • All women should understand what to expect when getting a mammogram for breast cancer screening – what the test can and cannot do.
  • Schedule a mammogram online or call Fairfax Radiology Centers at 703-698-4488.

Guidance for Those at Higher Risk

One of the most important things you can do to lower your risk of breast cancer is to know your risk and get screened. Those considered high risk for breast cancer include women who have, but are not limited to having:

  • A personal or family history of breast issues or breast cancer
  • Increased breast density
  • History of radiation treatment therapy to the chest or breasts
  • If you or your mother took diethylstilbestrol between 1940 and 1971
  • If you or close family members have known mutations or changes in your breast cancer genes (BRCA1, BRCA2, ATM, BARD1, CDH1, CHEK2, NBN, PALB2, PMS2, PTEN (Cowden syndrome), RAD51C, RAD51D, NF1 (neurofi bromatosis) or TP53 (Li-Fraumeni syndrome)

If you believe you are at higher risk, please schedule a consultation with a Saville provider for a breast cancer risk assessment. Schedule a mammogram online or call Fairfax Radiology Centers at 703-698-4488.
