Dry Needling (DN) is a treatment technique that utilizes thin, solid filament needles designed to penetrate the skin and stimulate underlying neural, muscular and connective tissues. Dry Needling evokes a healing response in painful neuromusculoskeletal conditions and improves movement impairments.

Patients with the following symptoms may benefit from Dry Needling:

  • Neck pain
  • Muscle strains
  • Repetitive stress injuries
  • Tendinitis/-nosis
  • Adhesive capsulitis
  • Knee pain
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Low-back pain
  • Si joint dysfunction
  • Plantar faciitis
  • Headache
  • Chronic pain
  • Decreased mobility

How Does It Work?

When a needle tip hits a trigger point, a characteristic local twitch response (LTR) in the muscle is noted by the clinician and the patient. This local twitch response is involuntary. It has been shown that the elicitation of local twitch responses is one of the important aspects in obtaining a successful therapeutic outcome for trigger point deactivation. Dry Needling may mechanically disrupt the contracted nature of the trigger point.

Is Dry Needling Similar to Acupuncture?

Dry Needling is a modern, science-based intervention for the treatment of pain and dysfunction in musculoskeletal conditions. Acupuncture is based on a ‘meridian map’ and the needle only penetrates the skin, whereas dry needling is based on the anatomic map and penetrates into muscle. Dry Needling is not acupuncture or Oriental Medicine; that is, it does not have the purpose

Outpatient P.T. Centers

What Is Lymphedema?

The lymphatic system absorbs the fluid that normally collects in the tissues throughout the body and returns the fluid back into the blood. Changes in the lymphatic system may cause a back-up of fluid in the system, leading to fluid collection in the tissues. This type of fluid collection is swelling or lymphedema. Lymphedema can occur anywhere in the body where there has been a change in the normal lymphatic flow, including the hand, arm, chest wall, breast or back.

Why Are Women Treated for Breast Cancer at Risk for Lymphedema?

Lymphedema occurs in a small number of women following treatment for breast cancer. It can be caused when tiny lymphatic vessels are damaged or cut during surgery or from scarring of the lymphatic channels during healing or radiation therapy.

Lymphedema may occur soon after therapy for breast cancer treatment or not until many years later. Sometimes swelling of the arm occurs immediately after auxiliary node dissection. Lymphedema therapy can be helpful if swelling remains longer than you and your surgeon feel is normal.

What Treatment Is Available?

If you have lymphedema, consider seeing a therapist trained in treating lymphedema. There are effective, time-efficient treatments available to help you. The best treatment programs use exercise, manual lymphatic drainage (a special massage technique), skin care and compression bandages as part of the treatment plan to reduce swelling. The compression bandages provide therapeutic pressure and are worn mostly at night and during exercise.

Inova services cover a full continuum of lymphedema care, from consultation, evaluation and treatment to lifelong follow-up as needed. Additional services at select locations include lymphedema support group referral, regular education classes for the community and an in-service educational resource center.

Massage Techniques

Myofascial Release

Myofascial release is the application of sustained, gentle pressure and movement into the fascial system to ease pain and discomfort. This therapy is especially effective in relieving cervical pain, back pain, fibromyalgia, scoliosis, neurological dysfunction, restriction of motion, chronic pain and headaches.

Neuromuscular Therapy

This comprehensive program of soft-tissue manipulation balances the central nervous system with the musculoskeletal system by locating and releasing spasms. Trigger points are eliminated, decreasing pain and helping to strengthen injured tissues, improving blood flow and restoring proper alignment.

Sports Massage

Sports massage enhances athletic performance and recovery and is effective used before or after an athletic event, or to treat an injury. Pre-event massage is stimulating to get the blood moving and muscles warmed up. Post-event massage helps calm the nervous system, flushes toxins and waste out of the body and can reduce recovery time, enabling an athlete to resume training sooner than rest alone would allow. When an athlete sustains an injury, skillful massage therapy can often speed and improve the quality of healing.

Trigger Point Myotherapy

A noninvasive therapeutic modality that relieves and controls myofascial pain and dysfunction with trigger point compression, massage, passive stretching and corrective exercises.

BRT Tapping Therapy

BRT tapping therapy is a form of acupressure that helps unlock the body's own healing qualities through a series of low-impact tapping techniques. BRT promotes the flow of vital energy and increases blood circulation to help with healing from many illnesses, aches, strains, chronic pains, and spinal injuries.

Tui na

Tui na (pronounced t-weigh na) is an ancient Chinese system of manual therapeutic hand movements, including pushing, lifting and squeezing techniques, to regulate the circulation of blood and qi (vital energy). Tui na helps facilitate healing and enhances resistance to disease.

Reflexology

Reflexology, sometimes referred to as zone therapy, involves application of pressure to specific areas in the foot, hands and ears that correspond to other parts of the body therapy. Reflexology stimulates the body's organs and relieves congestion, resulting in reduced pain and increased relaxation and circulation of blood and lymphatic fluids. Reflexology is especially useful in stress-related illness and emotional disorders and is convenient when an area of the body is traumatized or diseased to the extent that direct manipulation is not appropriate.

Shiatsu

Shiatsu is the application of pressure similar to acupressure that helps unblock the flow of life energy and restores balance in the meridians and organs in order to promote self-healing. Using pressure with the finger, thumb, palm, elbow or knee, the treatment brings about a sense of relaxation while stimulating blood and lymphatic flow. The benefits of this treatment may include pain relief and a strengthening of the body’s resistance to disease and disorder.

Swedish Massage

Swedish massage is a vigorous system of five basic strokes – kneading, rolling, vibrational, percussive and tapping movements with the hands – to manipulate the soft tissues of the body to energize and stimulate circulation. Oil or lotion may be applied to reduce friction of the skin. The benefits of Swedish massage are numerous, including generalized relaxation, dissolution of scar tissue adhesions and improved circulation, which may speed healing and reduce swelling from injury.

Acupressure

Acupressure is an ancient healing art that uses the fingers to press key points on the surface of the skin to stimulate the body’s natural self-curative abilities. In the process, muscular tension is released and the body's life force (known as qi or chi) circulates more freely to aid healing. Acupressure can be effective in helping relieve headaches, eye strain, sinus problems, neck pain, backaches, arthritis, muscle aches, tension due to stress, ulcer pain, menstrual cramps, lower backaches, constipation, and indigestion.

Deep Tissue Massage

Massage to the deep tissues and muscles affect the sub-layer of musculature and fascia to help with chronic muscular pain and injury rehabilitation. Deep tissue massage can reduce inflammation-related pain caused by arthritis and tendinitis. It is generally integrated with other massage techniques.

Prenatal and Pregnancy Massage

Prenatal massage can reduce pregnancy discomforts and enhance the physiological and emotional well-being of both mother and fetus. Skilled, appropriate touch may facilitate and shorten labor and ease pain and anxiety. Specialized postpartum techniques balance structure, physiology and emotions of the new mother and may help her to bond with and care for her infant.

The Inova Peripheral Nerve Center provides cutting edge surgical treatment for pain caused by injury to nerves, compression of nerves, and conditions of the peripheral nervous system such as carpal tunnel syndrome, thoracic outlet syndrome, and amputation stump pain.

What Is Peripheral Nerve Pain?

Carpal tunnel locationsThe peripheral nervous system is comprised of the nerves outside of our brain and spinal cord: the nerves in your face, arms and legs, and in your chest and abdomen. The peripheral nervous system sends messages from our brain that communicate with the rest of our body. Whether caused by traumatic injury, surgery, or conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, damage to the peripheral nerves can lead to chronic pain that is often difficult to diagnose.

Who Is a Possible Candidate for Nerve Surgery?

The Inova Peripheral Nerve Center is one of only a handful of institutions in the country that are currently offering these surgeries for patients who have exhausted other treatment options. Patients come to us with pain caused by conditions including:

  • Hand numbness or weakness
  • Persistent arm/hand/leg/foot pain after traumatic injuries or surgery
  • Chronic headaches that are not relieved by prescription medications
  • Groin pain after hernia repair
  • Unrelenting pain after laparoscopic surgery, breast reconstruction, Caesarian section, abdominoplasty, etc.
  • Phantom Limb or Amputation Stump Pain (neuromas)
  • Thoracic Outlet Syndrome
  • Compression neuropathy / pinched nerve
  • Nerve injury

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome is when the median nerve is compressed as it passes through the carpal tunnel. The carpal tunnel is an opening in your wrist that is formed by the carpal bones on the bottom of the wrist and the transverse carpal ligament across the top of the wrist. The median nerve provides sensory and motor functions to the thumb and 3 middle fingers. If it gets compressed or irritated, you may have symptoms. Read more about carpal tunnel syndrome in the Inova Health Library

Thoracic Outlet Syndrome

Thoracic outlet syndrome refers to a variety of symptoms that happen from a narrowing of your thoracic outlet — the space between your collarbone and your first rib. It can result from injury, disease, or a problem present from birth.

The thoracic outlet is a narrow space between your collarbone (clavicle) and your first rib. Nerves and blood vessels exit from your chest to your arm through this passageway. This includes a very large important artery (the subclavian artery), a large and important vein (the subclavian vein), and a bundle of nerves that serve your shoulder, arm, and hand. Your shoulder muscles normally keep your clavicle elevated and in place.

Various conditions can cause your collarbone to slip down and forward. This narrows the thoracic outlet and puts pressure on the nerves and blood vessels here. This causes the symptoms of thoracic outlet syndrome.

Healthcare professionals sometimes categorize thoracic outlet syndrome according to its underlying cause. For example, “cervical rib syndrome” refers to a type of thoracic outlet syndrome that can happen if a person has an extra upper rib. Clinicians also sometimes categorize thoracic outlet syndrome according to the structures compressed. Nerve, vein, and artery compression may all cause different symptoms (though there might be compression on more than one structure). Thoracic outlet syndrome is relatively uncommon. Women get it more often than men do. It can happen in people of any age. Read more about thoracic outlet syndrome in the Inova Health Library.

Planning for Your Peripheral Nerve Center Consultation

Identifying the cause of your pain is not always straightforward. Many patients will have seen several other physicians, physical therapists, or pain specialists without complete relief of their pain. In order to schedule your initial consultation, we ask that you obtain a referral from your current primary care doctor or specialist. We will work with you to obtain the necessary information ahead of time regarding all consultations and interventions. During your consultation, you will be asked to provide: a complete medical history, including information about previous surgical procedures, past and present medical conditions, any medications or supplements you are taking. Please understand that communication is crucial, during your consultation you and the surgeon will discuss your goals and reach an understanding about what you can expect from the proposed procedure.

Improve your golf swing

Do you want to drive the ball straighter, farther and with more consistency? Inova’s Fit to a Tee program can help you achieve the most efficient swing possible for your unique body. We offer extensive screening, data analysis and customized programs to help you meet your goals – all following the latest Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) standards.

The Titleist Performance Institute is a golfer-specific screening and exercise education program that can identify physical limitations that may be affecting a golfer's performance.

Available two locations in Northern Virginia, the program evaluates a participant's golf swing, flexibility and mobility.

Based on the information from the screening, our practitioners will provide specific exercises to help improve a golfer's swing, further develop mobility and stability to increase distance, and improve flexibility to help reduce the risk of injury.

Titleist Performance Institute Highlights

Screening

Inova begins by conducting a screening to assess your:

  • Swing mechanics
  • Biomechanics
  • Movement quality
  • Current health and health history
  • Physical fitness

Data Analysis to Improve Your Golf Skills

We use screening data to analyze:

  • How you compare to TPI’s data on golfers with the ideal body function to produce the most efficient swing possible
  • How your specific physical limitations may adversely affect your golf swing and potentially lead to injury

Personalized Performance Plan

Inova uses data analysis findings to help you condition for the most efficient swing possible based on your unique body, while increasing flexibility and mobility to reduce the risk of injury. The plan may include fitness training, physical therapy and treatment, coaching of swing mechanics and biomechanics.

About the Titleist Performance Institute (TPI)

  • TPI is the world’s leading educational organization and research facility dedicated to the study of how the human body functions in relation to the golf swing.
  • TPI seeks to educate golf industry professionals and the playing public on the importance of the body and how it relates to the golf swing.
  • TPI does not believe in one way to swing a club, rather in an infinite number of swing styles. But, we do believe there is one efficient way for every player to swing and it is based on what the player can physically do.
